Michael Praetorius describes this instrument as a very new instrument with British origins, even if he hasn‘t any name for it (it is subsumed under Violbastarda) and only mentions 6 playable gut strings but 8 resonating metal strings (Syntagma Musicum II page 47 / published 1620).

I'm going through her recordings on Spotify now. She is completely unintimidated by either the concertos or the hundred previous recordings that came before hers. Glenn Dicterow said the same concertos are performed over and over again so you have to do your own spin on them to keep them fresh. It's nice to hear some local orchestras that I haven't heard before.

Rachel, we were so privileged to have you in the Civic Orchestra all those years ago. I'll never forget hearing you run through the Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso after one of our rehearsals (you must have been 14 or so). That's when I really took notice of your amazing talent. Thanks so much for your artistry and tireless research into music by Black composers, too! And thanks for coming to Levine. You might aswell, speaking as a viol player, say it´s a Treble viol with sympathetic strings held differently. Having 7 strings it´s quite obviously not a violin. Nontheless of course mostly played (and very gorgeously) by violinists. Sadly not always with gut strings, which give it a more intimate and more heavenly sound
